Helping homeschool families build thoughtful readers, confident writers, and discerning thinkers through great books.
Welcome to English by the Books! I’m a veteran homeschool mom, writing instructor, and lifelong lover of great books.
I believe great writers read great books.
For nearly fifteen years, I’ve helped homeschool students discover the power of literature, writing, grammar, and critical thinking, not as isolated subjects, but as skills that work together to form thoughtful readers, confident writers, and discerning young adults.
My passion is helping students find their written voice while developing a deep appreciation for the written word. I want my students to know the joy of reading deeply. I want my students to examine, question, and think critically about their reading. Most of all, I want my students to know they can write with confidence and that their words have meaning in this world.
That is why I created English by the Books—and I'd be honored to join your family's story.

Helping homeschool families build thoughtful readers, confident writers, and discerning thinkers through great books.
Early in our homeschool journey, read-aloud time was a treasured part of family life. We prepared snacks, gathered cozy blankets, and sipped hot cocoa while I read another adventure aloud. I fondly remember meeting our friends in Pooh Corner, walking beside Anne in Avonlea, and forming our Fellowship to battle the armies of Mordor. Looking back, I can see how those stories shaped our family culture in ways I never fully appreciated at the time.
Now, I realize those stories were doing far more than entertaining us. They were teaching my children to think deeply, ask meaningful questions, communicate ideas, and see the world through someone else's eyes.
As the kids got older, read-aloud time grew into a monthly homeschool book club. Friends gathered around our dining table for book discussions, crafts, and of course, more snacks. During this same season, I was teaching writing and grammar classes to other homeschool students.
Along the way, I discovered something important: literature, writing, grammar, and critical thinking were never meant to be taught in isolation. Each strengthens the others. Great books spark ideas. Discussion develops understanding. Writing clarifies thinking. Grammar strengthens communication.
What began around our dining table eventually grew into years of teaching homeschool students, developing curriculum, and partnering with families who wanted a richer approach to English education.
Today, English by the Books exists to help homeschool families navigate high school English with confidence while keeping great books, thoughtful discussion, and meaningful learning at the center of the journey.
English by the Books is shaped by a Christian worldview and a belief that truth, goodness, and beauty matter. While our primary focus is literature, writing, grammar, and critical thinking, faith naturally informs the way we approach learning, character, and the study of great books.
Students are encouraged to engage thoughtfully with ideas, develop discernment, and pursue wisdom as they read, write, and discuss the stories that shape our understanding of the world.
