Why Great Books Still Matter in High School Education

In a world filled with short videos, endless scrolling, and constant distractions, some people question whether classic literature still matters.

I believe it matters more than ever.

Great books invite students to slow down, think deeply, and engage with ideas that have shaped human history for generations.

Great Books Build Critical Thinkers

Literature presents complex situations that rarely have simple answers.

Students encounter difficult choices, conflicting values, and thought-provoking questions that encourage deeper thinking and meaningful discussion.

Great Books Expand Vocabulary and Communication Skills

The language found in quality literature stretches students in ways that everyday conversation cannot.

Students naturally absorb stronger vocabulary, sentence structure, and communication skills through consistent reading.

Great Books Encourage Empathy

Stories allow students to step into experiences beyond their own.

They learn to understand different perspectives, wrestle with moral questions, and consider the consequences of choices.

Great Books Create Family Conversations

Some of the best homeschool moments happen around the dining table.

A memorable story often leads to meaningful discussions about character, faith, history, and life. These conversations help transform reading from an academic exercise into a shared family experience.

My most treasured memories from our early homeschooling years began with warm mugs of hot cocoa and a beloved story. At the time, I simply thought we were enjoying books together. What I didn't realize was that those moments were helping shape how my children would see the world, wrestle with ideas, and understand what is true, good, and beautiful.

Through literature, our family visited Pooh Corner, walked alongside Anne in Avonlea, and eventually formed our own Fellowship to battle the armies of Mordor. We laughed together, wondered together, and had conversations that might never have happened otherwise.

Literature is the human story across time. It allows us to encounter people, places, and ideas far beyond our own experience while helping us better understand our own lives.

Looking back, I realize I have had the privilege of living hundreds of stories alongside my children. Those shared experiences became part of our family's culture and some of our most cherished memories.

That is why great books matter. They do more than educate. They connect, inspire, challenge, and leave a lasting imprint on the hearts and minds of those who read them.
